Erzherzog Johann von Österreich – the 'Styrian Prince'
Why did a member of the Habsburg Family keep so busy with the viniculture?
Did it happen because Erzherzog Johann has been fascinated from the nature of Styria since his youth? Or was it his solidarity with the hard-working people living there and his effort to make their life easier by finding new methods in agriculture?
Because of him Styria became a centre of scientific occupation with viniculture. It became important even abroad.
Vineyards in Bozen, Stainz and especially Pickern/Marburg became model wineries.
New varieties of wine were cultivated and tested and the methods of wineries were improved. New vineyards were planted and a lot of today's typical Styrian varieties like Welschriesling, Traminer or Weißburgunder became popular.
As a result of these efforts there are a lot of awards. So in 1855 a Johannisberger Riesling got the 'Medaille lére Classe' in Paris.
