History of the Wine Cellars of Erzherzog Johann Weine
Until to 1787 this house with its ancient cellar was the private possession of the former owner of the castle.
In 1845 Anton Count of Attems became the owner of the property.
At the beginning of the 20th century the Richter family bought the estate Hauptstrasse 34 in Ehrenhausen. This family also owned the castle, therefore the cellar got its name Schloßkeller.
The year 1916 can be called the founding year of the wine cellar because it became the property of the Lagerhaus Genossenschaft.
First only finished wine from the wood was bought - nearly 80% from Austria. The amount of Styrian grapes was 150000 kg and 1mil. lt. wine a year 'flew through the cellar'. First only table wine was sold.
In the fifties the company used own grapes of the area to increase the quality and to establish the quality segment. It was a hard work to inspire all contracting winegrowers to cultivate their vineyards in order to get better quality of grapes.
In 1917 Erzherzog Johann Weine got its label. It can be seen as the year of birth of today's company Erzherzog Johann Weine. At the same time the wine cellar was rebuilt and enlarged. A new philosophy of high quality in a big wine cellar was established.
In 1997 some more investments guaranteed an improvement and better quality. Because of an innovative grape take-over and better production an increase has become posssible during the previous years.
In 2007 Erzherzog Johann Weine arranged the first IPS (International food standard) certification in a very successful way.
The transparent and professional vinification of the company shows its important significance,
